(ESPN) The Cubs finally Win the World Series in one of the greatest games ever

At least it didn’t take anything special to wipe out the longest title drought in the history of professional sports. Only the greatest World Series Game 7 ever played. That’s all.

Move over, Jack Morris and Luis Gonzalez. Tell Ralph Terry and Madison Bumgarner they had a great run. And you, Bill Mazeroski fans, submit your case via your favorite form of social media.

But we would argue that none of those games can top the passion, the drama and the history of Game 7 in Cleveland, on a balmy Wednesday night turned stormy Thursday morning. It took 10 exhausting innings and 4 hours and 45 exhilarating minutes. But when it finally ended, at 12:47 a.m., on Nov. 3, 2016, the giant left-field scoreboard read: Cubs 8, Indians 7. And it was suddenly possible to type a sentence that no living human has ever typed:

The Chicago Cubs are the champions of baseball.

Read it all.

Great game! Great team! Go Cubs!

And the Indians exceeded all expectations in the playoffs. Well done.

Thought of you when I saw the news Kendall!!! Congrats! What a wonderful time to be a Cubs fan. I’ve never really been a Cubbie fan, but even so, I was tempted to stay up and watch live here in Africa last night (would have been midnight – 5 a.m.) (or at least follow twitter, as my internet connection is often too slow to stream stuff…) but it’s a VERY busy work season, and need to prioritize sleep, so I went to bed… Sorry I missed what looks to have been an EPIC game!

  3. Kendall Harmon says:

I have 50 plus years as a Cubs fan, which compared to others is as nothing, but boy this meant a lot. And it was a harrowing and great game.

  4. Ad Orientem says:

Being a Mets fan with the Cubs as my fallback, has generally meant limited interest in the post season over the years. This year (and last) have been glorious exceptions. This was without a doubt the greatest baseball game I’ve ever watched.

    GO CUBS!

  5. Pageantmaster Ù† says:

    Many congratulations.

In passing it has always struck this Englishman as strange to have a ‘world series’ for a game almost exclusively played within the United States and a few of its overseas islands and military bases. But then, I recollect a church which made similar global claims.

  6. Katherine says:

Well, Pageantmaster, there is a team in Toronto, so we can claim some Commonwealth involvement. Plus, a lot of the players these days are from the Caribbean islands, and even Venezuela.
